What are Omega-3 fatty acids?

The main omega-3 fatty acids – EPA and DHA – are mainly found in certain types of fish. They have a beneficial effect on our health, but the body does not produce them on its own. Sometimes the positive effect is due to one of them, and sometimes to their combination. For example, DHA contributes to the normal function of the brain and vision. On the other hand, the combination of both omega-3 acids helps to maintain normal heart function.

Only highly purified PUFA concentrates obtained from wild marine fish (preferably from northern latitudes) or deep-sea seaweed can be considered as high-quality sources of omega-3. Even farmed fish cannot be considered a good source of omega-3, as they are fed with compound feed – which not only contains less omega-3 but can also include extremely harmful contaminants: pesticides, heavy metals, antibiotics, and hormones.

In medicine, there is the concept of the omega-3 index, which is similar to cholesterol levels and is used to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease. It reflects the total content of DHA and EPA in red blood cells. A low level increased the risk of coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death.
